booting Aixploits
Normaly, you would say: "insert the DVD and wait...". Booting Aixploits is such as easy. Anything you have to do is to take an appropiate choice concerning your beamer after inserting the DVD.
Our experience when connection a beamer was, that beamer A behaves in an other way as beamer B does. So we offer some alternatives, when Aixploits configures the display-resolution:
- Aixploits-normal:
let Aixploits find the resolution and a appropriate driver for your chipset (default).
- Aixploits (low resolution):
Aixploits will find the appropriate driver for you chipset and set up a resolution of 1024x768 pixel.
- Aixploits (vesa):
Aixploits will use the vesa-driver and search for the best possible resolution. Whether there is an output both on your laptop-tft and on your beamer depends on your laptop manufactor. For instance on an acer-laptop there was an output on both devices, whereas on an IBM-Thinkpad only the TFT or the Beamer works. (Switchable by FN+F7)
- Aixploits (vesa, low resolution):
if the possibilities above are not sufficant for you, this one should work as an fall-back. Aixploits will use the vesa-driver and sets the resolution to 1024x768 pixel. Here also it depends on your laptop, whether both, Beamer and TFT, or only one of this will work.
These four choices are also combined with an option to indicate Aixploits, that a connection to a network should be searched. In the default case (e.g. you wait 30 seconds...) Aixploits will not search for an DHCP-Server.
If your TFT or the beamer you use doesn't work in the way you expected, we would be grateful for your information.
releases
Addicted to your hardware or your degree of utalization we designed three different releases:Full Release
This DVD containts Aixploits with all the virtual machines containing the exploits. Some virtual machines may work lazy. We are not blame of this fact, reading huge data amount from a DVD or CD needs some time. Smaller machines work satisfying, greater machines such at SuSE 10.1 works also. If you want to demonstrate internet failures you don't have any constraints.
If you obtain a USB-Stick, we advise you to use this release:
Presentation-DVD
USB-Devices like an USB-Stick is not as expensive as it was in the past. Use this release to accelerate Aixploits. For that purpose name your USB-Stick "vmachines" and copy desired machines to it. Aixploits will find your USB-Stick.
Virtual machines are not included in this release.
External Hard Disk
This is one not intended to be a DVD for presentation issues on its own. It is only a very small .iso-file which makes it possible to boot an external usb-disk whitout changing your bios-settings. Furthermore, many laptos are not able to boot from a USB-device. By using this release it is although possible to plug in a usb-hard-disk and develop Aixploits.
If your PC is not fast enough, even though you use the presentation DVD, this might be a possibility to apply Aixploits during your talk. Extrakt the tar-ball "aixploits-source" on a 3-4 GIG sized partition of an external hard-disk. For more informations, see the next part.
build your own DVD
We offer three different tar-balls:
aixploits-source.tar.bz2
To boot Aixploits from an external hard-disk you only need this one and the "external-hard-disk"-CD we mentioned above. We propose a size of 3-4 Gigabytes.
virtual-machines.tar.bz2
This tar-ball includes our virtual-machines in a non-squashed form. To extrakt it on a partition, it should be sized round about 10 Gigabytes. Please name your Partition "virtual-machines". If you do that, Aixploits will automaticaly mount this partition and your virtual machines are available in the right directory. Now the virtualisation-software VMware-Player™ can directly write into the different files of a virtual machine and therefor shows a observable speed-up.
aixploits-addon.tar.bz2
This tar-ball includes the portage-tree of the Gentoo instalation, man-pages, and other stuff which it not needed to put the Live-DVDs into operation. You can find these directories in mounts.
For you, as a developer of Aixploits, other files and directories are more important. aixploits.inc is the directory which contains the config-Files of the framework. How to use it, you can find there.
root-protoype and root-prototype-usb-hd are two home-directories for root, which will be matched depended on your choice at boot-time. When you boot with the external-harddisk-CD, Aixploits will ask you, if you want to mount the home-directory, which will be included in a DVD release (in form of a full release or a presentation DVD) or another one.
This might be usefull to test your own Exploits. No browser-cache or bash-history will be included in a release, if you choose possibility (1) at boot-time. root-prototype is the one, wich will be included in a DVD-release.Further prototypes, like grub config-files you can find in the directory called prototypes. Normally you don't need to touch these files.
Be aware of updating the installed Gentoo-System. Some init-files have been edited in order to determine, whether Aixploits boots from DVD or from a hard-disk. Addicted to that it performs some steps differently, e.g. ejecting the DVD after a shutdown. If an update overwrites these config-files, you can find a backup in prototypes/etc.
You are able to boot the hard-disk containing Aixploits in a VMware™-environment by configuring the .iso of the external-hard-disk-CD as an CD-ROM of an VMware™-Machine.
Okay, i have it! Tell me, how to create my own DVD
Adopted, you have your own VMware™-Machines with own examples. Then it might be usefull to burn your own presentation or full release-DVD. For this task, we developed a perl-script named build-dvd.pl. It asks you, what it wants to know and saves your decision in a config-file, which you can find under /etc/aixploits. This means, that you can also edit that file concerning your whishes and tell the perl-script to perform like told in this file: build-dvd.pl --read-config --(all|snap|pres|vmware)
